Challah is a special Jewish braided bread eaten on Sabbath and holidays. It is also named khale, barches, berches, Zopf, barkis, bergis, birkata in Judeo-Amharic, viano?ka in Slovak language, Tsoureki in Greek, kalács, cha?ka, colaci, and kitke.
Ingredients
  • 2 cups warm water
  • 3 pkgs.or 3 Tbl yeast
  • ¾ cups sugar
  • 1 ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup butter, melted and cooled
  • 5 eggs, one for glaze
  • 5-7 Cups Flour
Instructions
  1. Mix water, yeast, sugar, salt, butter, 4 eggs, and 3 cups of flour; let sit ½-1 hour. Add rest of flour and knead. Place in buttered bowl, butter top of dough, and let rise 2 hours. Punch down, shape, brush with mix of water and egg, and let rise again. Bake at 375º until golden brown (times are approx):
  2. -4 loaves 25-30 minutes
  3. -2 loaves 30-35 minutes)
